Development Underwriter - Professional Risks
Here at Tokio Marine HCC, we have great people in our teams across London and the regions with valuable experience and expertise. To get to know our experts a bit better, we’ll be profiling a series of Q&As. This edition is the turn of Geoff Proctor, our Birmingham Development Underwriter – Professional Risks.
What is your role at TMHCC?
I am an underwriter based in the Tokio Marine HCC Birmingham office, where I serve our Professional Indemnity (PI) portfolio of business. I have been at the company for nearly 2 years now. Within my role, I focus on developing new and existing broker relationships and find it very rewarding having the opportunity to be constantly meeting new people. I dedicate my time with brokers to explain what products we have to offer, ranging from our online platform, multi risk covers and direct debit solutions.
What do you know now that you wish you had known when you first started in the industry?
I have worked for both broker and insurer companies, which have given me the exposure to different environments, and have helped shape my understanding of the insurance industry. It doesn’t matter which side of the industry you work on, everyone has the same agenda: to secure profitable business. I have become much more respectful now than I was when I first started, understanding that whether you are an underwriter or a broker, there are always challenges. I wish I had known that it is always best to discuss the complexities of a risk and to take on board the opinions of others around me, as this helps develops both knowledge and skill.
What is the biggest change you have seen over the past ten years in the insurance market?
Over the past 10 years there has been a huge development in the industry when it comes to online platforms and social media use. There is now a constant demand for news and data to be shared, meaning that you know everyone and everything that is going on in the industry. Companies are now ever-innovating and keeping up with developments in the technology space, but if firms do not meet such advancements then they will struggle to maintain their position in the market.
What motivates you on a Monday morning?
On a Monday morning, I focus on the satisfaction that I will get from ensuring that Tokio Marine HCC’s high standards are maintained by the work that I do and to continue to achieve successful results for the business.
