The land surveying unit of a civil engineering firm was hired by the general contractor to conduct survey work for an ongoing roadway project. Prior to setting new bridge girders on a highway overpass structure, it was discovered that the steel pilings for the bridge’s north abutment had been driven in the wrong location, causing the span between bearing points to be approximately five feet too long. Investigation determined that a staking error by the surveyor was the cause. The professional liability policy paid for the remediation of the error.*
