Broker Expo: A day in the life of Chris Ashmead
Our Regional Liability Underwriting Manager from our Bridgend office, Chris Ashmead was in Coventry for the Broker Expo – here’s what his day looked like:
09:00 – Breakfast and Networking
After grabbing a quick bite to eat and fuelling up with a cup of coffee, it’s off to the Ricoh Arena. Not often do you have the opportunity to meet and speak to so many expert brokers in one room, and the Expo provides the chance to network with those outside your circle. Today, I’m keen to share about the importance of our Employer Liability cover with SME brokers from across the U.K.
10:00 – BIBA Insight: Incoming regulations
The first session of the day provides valuable insight for the road ahead in regulation and compliance. Since coming to Tokio Marine HCC in 2006, I’ve watched a constantly evolving marketplace and learned that staying ahead of incoming changes and new criteria to meet is essential – these sessions are always valuable.
10:30 – 11:30 – Digital Transformation and Morning Refreshments
After an enlightening workshop session on how the digital age is impacting customer experience, I head back to Stand 84, where our Professional Risks underwriting team has been speaking to brokers. At such a wide-reaching event, there are representatives from across the country, and it creates an opportunity to share about the focus we put on regional brokers, and our underwriters supporting them.
12:15 – 13:00 – A Need to Know Session and a Busy Lunchtime
The next afternoon session covered the topic on everyone’s minds: General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Terence gave insight as to how regulators are advising brokers on managing client information, and what the changes coming in May 2018 will mean for brokers. After the session, I have the chance to say hello to some familiar faces and meet a few new ones. It’s a good opportunity to talk through our Liability cover, and the multi-risk products we offer, including public liability and management liability. There are many SMEs here, which is exactly who this product was designed for, along with contractors with design exposure, low risk contractors like electricians, painters and builders, and specialist affinity group schemes.
13:15 – 14:30 – Catching Stuart Pearce’s motivational speech
Again, it’s not every day that you get the chance to listen in on a former England coach motivating a crowd of brokers and insurers! This was a highlight for me, but it’s hard to believe the day is nearly over.
While many head to a stand-out session on growth hubs, I am in the exhibition space, making the most of the last few hours of Expo by having some meaningful conversations. I love taking the time to listen to the needs of brokers, as there’s no better way to know how we can be continually evolving and improving our services for them. With so many requiring specialist underwriting expertise, I’m proud to be able to offer effective solutions that are backed by the Tokio Marine HCC name.
15:30 – Expo ends for another year
The day has flown by – it seems I’ve walked miles while attending sessions and networking with brokers. As the Expo comes to a close, it’s good to reflect on the relationships built and strengthened, and the expertise shared by session and workshop leaders. It’s been a whirlwind, but I look forward to doing it all again next year.
