To get to know our experts a bit better, we’ll be profiling a series of Q&As. This edition is the turn of Keith Miller, our Manchester Development Underwriter – Professional Risks.  

What is your role at TMHCC?
I work in the Manchester office as a Development Underwriter focusing on Professional Indemnity, Management Liability and Cyber insurance business lines. I started my role at Tokio Marine HCC just over three months ago, where I joined from Zurich. I enjoy working across a broad range of Professional Risks product lines, while focussing particularly on the SME market.  

What do you know now that you wish you had known when you first started in the industry?  
I wish I had known that there is no shame in asking, ‘can you explain that to me?’ Having cut my teeth in the broking world many years ago dealing with engineers and solicitors, they would often speak in their own technical terms, which without direct experience in their sector often flew over my head. Simply asking them to explain their own business or a particular scenario in layman’s terms not only helped my own experience, but also allowed me to better serve them. As insurers, we have a good deal of experience from our own books of business but with new exposures continually on the horizon there is a good deal of knowledge that clients and brokers can impart, being closer to the coal face.      

What is the biggest change you have seen over the past five years in the insurance market?
I have seen a substantial change in the buying habits of customers. Historically there has been significant value placed on the level of cover over cost, however in the ever-changing market conditions, cost is becoming a prominent deciding factor for the insured. It is important that cost does not deter from the type of cover required but the market must adapt to the changing demands from those who require insurance.     

What motivates you on a Monday morning?  
Family and food!
