Captive Stop Loss

Controls the severity of risk in a self-funded program through a stop loss captive.

Expertise in Underwriting. Strength through Partnership.

A successful stop loss captive requires more than simply sharing risk. It requires the right risk structure, disciplined underwriting, appropriate pricing, and strong alignment among the four key parties: the employer, broker/consultant, captive manager, and stop loss carrier.

At Tokio Marine HCC – A&H Group, we understand our role in that partnership.

Stop Loss Captive underwriting is what we do

TMHCC brings deep experience in underwriting and pricing stop loss captives. Our approach recognizes that a captive is not simply traditional stop loss with an additional layer of risk. Each layer of risk must be evaluated and priced appropriately to create a structure designed for long-term sustainability. Our underwriters understand how risk moves between the employer’s specific deductible, the captive risk layer, and TMHCC’s excess risk layer. We work to establish the appropriate balance of risk and premium across those layers based on the characteristics of the captive and its member employers. That underwriting expertise helps create consistent, sustainable pricing while allowing employers to participate in the potential financial benefits of their captive.

Four Players. One Successful Captive.

The strongest stop loss captives are built when the four parties work together:

  • Employer – Takes an active role in managing healthcare costs and selecting a level of risk appropriate for its organization.
  • Broker/Consultant – Advises the employer, helps develop the overall benefits strategy, and serves as an important connection between the employer and its captive partners.
  • Captive Manager – Provides leadership and management of the captive, helping align the interests of its members and coordinating the captive's long-term strategy.

HCC Life as the Carrier – Provides disciplined underwriting, appropriately prices and structures the captive and excess risk layers, and delivers the stop loss protection supporting the program.

Each party has a distinct role. Long-term captive success depends on all four being aligned.

Partnership is Central to our Approach

TMHCC doesn't attempt to replace the expertise of the other parties. We focus on performing our role exceptionally well while developing strong working relationships with employers, brokers/consultants, and captive managers. That means open communication, transparency in our underwriting approach, flexibility in captive structure, and a willingness to work collaboratively when circumstances change. Our experienced captive underwriting team works directly with our partners to understand each captive's membership, risk tolerance, historical performance, and long-term objectives. This partnership allows us to develop stop loss structures designed around the captive rather than forcing the captive into a standard stop loss model.

Built for Long-term Success

Stop loss captives can give employers greater control over their healthcare dollars while providing protection against claim volatility. A predetermined portion of stop loss premium is ceded to the captive to fund its risk layer, while TMHCC assumes the excess risk above the captive layer. When captive premium exceeds claims, fees, and expenses, participating employers may share in the resulting captive profit. But the value of a captive should be measured over time—not simply by the profit generated in a single year.

TMHCC's combination of captive-specific underwriting expertise, disciplined pricing, flexible risk structures, and strong partnerships with employers, brokers/consultants, and captive managers provides a foundation designed for sustainable, long-term stop loss captive success.

We know our role. We know how to underwrite it. And we know that the best captives succeed when all four partners succeed together.
